![]() SABERTOOTH CATS ![]() The "saber-toothed tiger," Smilodon, is the California State Fossil and the second most common fossil mammal found in the La Brea tar pits. Sabertooth cats had enlarged upper canines, some up to 18 centimeters (7 inches) long. The most likely reason for these enlarged teeth was increased hunting ability. Another possibility is they used them as a social display structure, like most horns and antlers. This lends support to the idea that sabertooths were indeed social animals.
