![]() TURTLES Miocene turtles included this monster, a huge, 20 foot plus leatherback turtle that left its massive skull for our contemplation. While modern adult leatherback skulls are about as big as a large grapefruit, the skulls of Miocene turtles can range up to basketball sized at 15" long, 12" wide, and 8" high. The museum is currently restoring a section of its carapace: a massive jigsaw puzzle of inch-wide bony plates, called scutes, that is five feet long and growing!
